Welcome! This is a website for parents, teachers, students and others interested in communication disorders and school-based speech-language therapy. I am married to Walt Harper. He is a project manager for Hatch Early Learning. We have two children; Olivia (12) and Ethan (10) and a black lab named Luna. I completed my undergraduate degree in communication disorders at Appalachian State University; and I also received my master's degree from ASU in May 2001. In August of that year, I started working for Stokes County Schools and have worked at several schools in the county. I am currently based at Poplar Springs Elementary, and am the lead Speech Therapist for the county. Other responsibilities include being a Reading Foundations Trainer and a member of the Stokes County Autism Coaching Team. We receive training from NC DPI and then train staff in our county and help problem solve and provide support for teachers. A school-based SLP has many roles. Here are some of mine: observe, screen, evaluate, treatment as a part of special education, interventionist in regular education, consultation with other teachers/therapists, collaborate, train, plan, document, prevent, organize classroom environment, develop plans, research, lead and participate in continuing education. I am trained in many programs used to treat communication disorders PECS, PODD, LIPS, Zones of Regulation, and have experience programming and using AAC devices. I am a regular member of the student support team (SST) to help problem solve student strengths and needs for them to be successful in the classroom.
